Domhnain

Domhnain means ‘land’ in Celtic. This meditation on interconnection invites audiences to consider our role as dwellers and stewards within delicate ecosystems, where every species exists in mutual dependence. Change one part, and you affect the whole.

The piece was created in response to the hidden ecology of Clennon Gorge Nature Reserve with its underground caves, streams, and ancient woodland, that shelter some of the UK’s most endangered species, including greater and lesser horseshoe bats. Domhnain takes a collective perspective on place, where ‘memory’ and ancient ‘knowingness’ is shared across species and generations.

The work is open to zoo visitors (no booking required) in the Ark Theatre, Paignton Zoo throughout August 2025. Running time 12 mins. Media: 3D sculpture made from reclaimed damaged mesh from animal enclosures; generative moving image projections; original sound score with poetic text, found sounds and music composition. Photographic images from the site by Wild Planet Trust. With thanks to the brilliant team at Wild Planet Trust who guided us in learning about the site, collecting images, field recordings and fragments of text about the site.

Domhnain is a site-adaptable multimedia installation available from autumn 2025 for cultural and conservation venues with indoor spaces for exhibitions. We work with each site to research and gather words, sounds and images specific to that patch of land to create a unique installation that reflects the special ecology of each place.
